Assignments about the World Trade Center and Vivian Gornick

Pre-reading

1. Find Greenwich Village and the World Trade Center (9/11 memorial) (use Google Maps)

 2. What has 9/11 meant to the US and the world? 9/11 has been a shock to both the US and the entire world.

People have become more frightened by terrorism (especially in the US and generally in Europe). Every year on the 9th of September people all over the world use social media to “greed” over this tragic happening – even now after 10 years. Also it has been sort of a wake-up call to all of us when talking about terrorism. The security systems have been improved and it is not a happening that one just forgets.

Post-reading

1. Write a shot analysis of the text as you would present it at an oral exam, using the Rhetorical Pentagon (writer – topic – circumstances - reader – language – intention)

The writer of the text is Vivian Gornick and it is located in New York, USA. The writer tells, in the text, about how she read books in general and how the event on 9/11 has affected her reading, which I would classify as the topic of the text. Vivian introduces the reader to New York and the feeling of being part of a city that went through such a tragic event. She starts by telling the feeling on the morning on the 9th of September. Throughout the text she writes using several adjectives in almost every sentence; this gives one the chance to re-feel what a whole nation felt after that day.

 2. What is the message of the text?

Vivian undoubtedly wants to share her grief with the entire world by writing this text and that it is not “only” an attack by terrorists, but that it is in fact bigger than that – and much worse that one can image. New York has not and will not be the same after the 9th of September, and that it has affected every citizen in New York – not only the ones who experienced loss.
